Begin with the movement that matters.
Think about the everyday activity you would like help with. That may be moving around your home, returning to a familiar routine or understanding a concern that is affecting movement. A specific goal gives the first conversation a useful focus.
Tell the team whether you have been referred, have recently had a hospital stay or are already following a treatment plan. Relevant reports and earlier recommendations can help the physiotherapist understand the context.
Expect an assessment, then a plan.
At a first appointment, a physiotherapist typically asks about symptoms, health history and daily life, and may assess movement, strength or balance. The assessment informs a discussion about suitable treatment and the next sessions.
Use that discussion to ask what the proposed plan is intended to achieve, how progress will be considered and what you should do between visits. An individualized recommendation is more useful than copying an exercise routine that was designed for someone else.
Give the session room to work.
Tell the team about access to the home and any space limitations. Choose clothing that makes it easy to move and discuss any privacy preferences before the visit. Let the physiotherapist advise which area of the home is appropriate for the assessment.
You do not need to buy equipment before the first conversation unless your treating professional has specifically asked you to. If you already use an aid or prescribed equipment, mention it when arranging the appointment.
Keep the next session connected.
Before the visit ends, clarify the agreed plan and how you should contact the team with questions. If home activities are recommended, ask for the instructions in a form you can follow confidently.
Keep track of the questions that arise between visits. Changes in your day-to-day experience can be useful information for the next discussion with the physiotherapist.
